Nikolai was taken to a secret facility beneath the Russian city of Kiev. He was being prepped for his surgery in the operation room. with six Russian military nurses and four other scientists. Colonel Kostivan and Nikolai’s wife Elsa sat in the observation room with twelve military officers waiting for the procedure to start. All the military officers wanted to see the first bionic man and the return of their greatest soldier. Dr. Alexi Rilov and professor Hans Marcus were washing their hands to sterilize for the surgery.
Rilov looked at Marcus and said, “ Professor, I’ve seed this boy before he has a mysterious ability to heal. We have had so many failures and this boy could be the success we’ve been working for.” Marcus looked at Rilov with annoyed and replied, “Herr doctor, I don’t believe in miracles i believe in science and this cur is just like the other dogs. He will most likely die.”
The two men entered the room and Rilov walked off to brief the nurses while Marcus grabbed a microphone and began to speak. “Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to this momentous event.” Marcus said this with a sort of suave to him, and as he spoke a nurse injected Nikolai with a syringe full of morphine then whispered in his ear, “I’m sorry sir if we put you to sleep you could die this is all we could do, it should numb the pain.” Nikolai looked at her and said, “thank you.” He readied his body trying to purge any fear he had. Nikolai had trouble disconnecting himself, when he looked towards the observation room to see Elsa, and Kostivan watching.
Marcus continued with his speech, “Ladies and gentleman this is captain Nicholas Jertonovich Michaels. Born December twenty fifth nineteen sixty nine, Moscow. He was born with Tetralogy of the fallot, a heart disease starving him of oxygen due to low blood flow through the heart. Because of this disease he needed a heart transplant. Later in life at age twelve, he murdered his teacher and three class mates, and was thrown in a Siberian prison.
He was then forced to join the army and was put into the Russian special operations and became the most feared soldier on the battlefield.” Marcus snapped his fingers and two nurses carrying cases appeared. He opened the cases revealing two dissembled mechanical limbs with fibered cords. The limbs in the first case were a forearm and a right hand, in the second case was a leg from the knee down with a left foot. Marcus continued, “I dare to do what no man has done before and create the first bionic man! So Let us begin.” With that Marcus put down the microphone and picked up a scalpel.
Three hours later
“Ahhh!” Nikolai screamed as Rilov assembled his right arm and a nurse held his new metallic hand. His body tensed with every second as he gripped the medical beds bar with his left hand and screamed. He could feel the doctor attaching wires to his nerves and he bit his lip to the point of bleeding. “Ahh- aahh!” The pain was so intense he felt himself tear up. He could feel every morsel of pain, as he felt them reopen his stubbed arm and legs and stripped some of the flesh from his body. He felt the metal frames the limbs be attached then screwed in. A nurse came to wipe the sweat from Nikolai’s head, Nikolai grabbed the woman and began to choke her. Every second of pain he felt he squeezed more. He finally released the woman as she fell to the floor grasping for air. Nikolai looked towards the observation room and screamed.
One of the men in the observation room was General Krivech and he began to chuckle. He spoke with the other officers who nodded and laughed. Elsa stood up and put her hand on the glass as she cried. Krivech stood up fixed his coat and put his hat on and spoke said,” Have a good night gentlemen. Women and their emotions only cloud judgment.” He laughed then left the room.
Rilov looked at Nikolai as he held a reversible ratchet on a switch, “Captain, all i have left is to attach your nerves to the arm. Brace yourself.” Nikolai bared down and tried breathing slowly, he then nodded and Rilov nodded back. “On three, one, two, three” Rilov tightened the switch and engaging the nerves, and sending a surge through Nikolai. The surge caused such an immense pain, Nikolai screamed louder than he ever had. Nikolai suddenly felt it. He could feel the limb and the hand of Rilov. For the first time in months he could feel his hand and arm as if it hand never been lost. Nikolai was overwhelmed with a small joy until the second connection. “Aaahhhhhhh!”
Marcus smiled and Nikolai passed out. Marcus’s smile faded as he looked and Rilov and said, “Rilov, check his pulse!” Rilov put his fingers on Nikolai’s external jugular artery. The entire room was silent and the observation was silent too. Elsa and Kositivan was in front of the glass with tears streaming down her face as she prayed. “Listen, we don’t talk and I’ve never begged you for anything, but if you do exists you keep him alive. No man is stronger than him but right now he needs you, so you keep him alive and you take me. Please help him.
